Here's the tiny gap either side *AFTER* installing foam strips along the outside to keep the console away from them - its a tight fit, the foam pushes the dock gap wider so without the foam the plastic tabs gap would be even smaller.

So yes 6mm of clearance otherwise the system wouldn't rock back and fourth, when the system is fully leaning one way the's about 6mm of space. You have bit's of foam holding your Switch in place that's why you think it's a tight fit.
