I think nintendo counts on users/early adopters promoting it by simply bringing it to school or other events. The social component (local multiplayer) that they are heavily promoting in the trailers could bring the popularity with the right software (1-2 switch isn't it, maybe for the most casual users, but it needs propagation from the early adopters first or it should be a pack-in).
So, maybe when local mario kart "tournaments" start everywhere people will be inclined to get one.
