Isn't this kind of normal, though? If your PS4 suddenly dies I'm pretty sure that data is gone as well, is it not?

From what I'm reading yes it can't be transferred by any means.

I believe other consoles have ways to backup your save file via memory cards or USB sticks etc...I dont have the Switch so i'm not sure if it's possible to transfer your saved files onto your SD card.  If that's possible then yes you're correct and it shouldn't be a big deal.
