How would that work as backup plan? All that's left for the 3DS from Nintendo are minor games that are being worked on by minor departments or outside studios. Nintendo's top teams are all working on Switch games and those couldn't be simply moved to the 3DS. Nevermind that the 3DS has entered its seventh year, so it's too old to sufficiently bridge the gap until late 2020 which would be the earliest point that Nintendo could realistically launch a new system. It would be a terrible backup plan, so Nintendo really has no choice but to give it their all with Switch. |
I highly doubt that they haven't done R&D on a 3DS successor, even if they don't release it they probably already have looked into it. It would probably hurt them a lot, but with how everyone goes on about how much they have in the bank, they would probably be able to do it.
