That doesn't seem very sound. If all it took was that, then the Wii U would have sold well.

The Wii U hadn't locked up Nintendo's entire support because the 3DS existed. With Switch there will be no such thing as "It's not doing well, but that isn't so bad because we have another platform that is going to be at the very least moderately successful." For 2017 alone, Nintendo has already confirmed four guaranteed systemsellers: Zelda, Mario Kart, Splatoon and 3D Mario. Since they'll introduce a paid online service this fall, it isn't farfetched that they are preparing a Deluxe version of Super Smash Bros. 4 for the holidays (an all-new SSB seems unrealistic this year).

The Wii U shouldn't be looked at as a parallel, because the circumstances surrounding Switch are very different. We already know that Nintendo is going to bring their biggest IPs faster to Switch than to any of their previous systems. Nintendo is very serious about this, because there is no other system that can serve as backup plan.

Well, they seem to have the 3DS right now as a back-up plan, so I don't really think that they're in a do-or-die situation right now.
