It is, because you're ignoring the fact that some people would prefer to place it horizontaly. The device should accomodate the users, not the other way around. Heck, on this very forum there are people who have said they will primarily be using it as a home console, not as a handheld. The ability to easily take it out of the dock will, in those cases, be almost completely irrelevant, while the fact it can't be placed in a TV stand could very well be a deal breaker. And that's really something that is easily fixable with no additional cost, as long as it was thought about during the design process.
