Sure, one of the JoyCons could fall down instead, but these are cheaper to replace than the main device.

Would be a safer design, but also less convenient. The way its made, you can slide on and off the Joy-Cons while the console is in the dock. which works as a charging station for both the console and Joy-Cons, so that's going to be common usage for the majority of people. It would be a bit of a hassle to always have to remove the console from the dock to put back on or remove Joy-Cons.

Well, I wouldn't remove them at home and use the Pro controller instead for TV mode ;)
