On the user base side we will have to agree to disagree.

As to why they would build a game for a user base of say 10 Million in 2020 if we are massively conservitive, compaired to a user base of 160 Million. It comes down to passion, and desire to create the best product they can offer. It is the same reasons developers take massive risks on brand new platforms every generation. It is the same reason a developer/publisher spends 10's of millions on new and unproven franchises. Yes, everyone is in the business to make money, but they also want to make the most amazing experience they can, and VR is on a completely new level.

As for splashing out 100's just for said game, I don't think that will be a big deal by 2020. PS4 + PSVR will be $299.99 by that point, and there will be 100's of games, 100's of experiences, 100's of educational tools, and all sorts of Video from Youtube to Hollywood. If you choose to add a VR device to your platform of choice in 2020, you will have a massive selection that will have plently for you to enjoy, besides just GTA.

A simple question, though. Even if they choose to go VR - why waste the potential income by going exclusive? Remember, this is a company that enjoys big profits from microtransactions, which are directly influenced by its large user base. Smaller audience, less microtransactions, less income. Not a risk worth taking.

As for your point about it being the most amazing experience... What gives it the right to be exclusive instead of inclusive? Did you see the TV completely supersede radio? Of course not.

It is hard to say if they would loose potential income though. That is what taking risks is about. They could build a traditional game and have a massive drop in sales, since people are burned out from GTA5, or they could do the same or better. On the flip side they could do a VR only game and sell even better in the long run, or they could do it, and it could stil come up short of getting everyone to buy in. It is just impossible to tell.

As far as being VR exclusive vs something like RE7. That comes down to just how deeply they want to go VR. Will they be building around the motion controls, or will they be building around traditional controller? Will they build missions in a limited function so they can be possibble on a traditional display, or will they take advantage of the ability to look around in ways they could not adopt to in traditional a game?

In a lot of ways, you could still have games on traditional display. It is basically the difference between watching/playing on TV as opposed to actually being there. It is definitly a lite experience, but possible. I think their will be a lot of games early that take the RE7 route, and that is fine. I think it will quickly turn to here is a TV option, but the game is built to be experienced in VR.

As far as a complete take over by VR. I don't belive it will happen. I think their will always be small dev teams that make 2D and 3D titles. Basically, it is modern retro gaming. Just in 10 years, retro will be things like Uncharted, Gears, Skyrim, ect., while new games from AAA devs in VR will be unthinkable experiences for most right now.
