Rumble technologies on all Nintendo consoles have been optional so if it's still not your thing, you won't have to suffer through it.

Do be aware that developers are looking at ways of using it directly in the games making it a requirement.

Developers making games that must be played using HD Rumble is a good thing in my opinion. It means those developers like the tech and are making games around it.

I disagree with all my heart.

There was a charming little RPG released early in the life of the PS3.  I liked everything about it--that is, until the combat started.  It turned out that to finish off enemies, you had to shake the bloody controller like you were strangling a cat.  Completely ruined the game for me and I never went back, all because the developer had to jump on the "new controller tech" bandwagon.
