Wouldn't it be a safer design if the joycons slide up from the bottom instead of slide down from the top? Even if the the release pins fail, the main device couldn't be pulled down by gravity this way.

Sure, one of the JoyCons could fall down instead, but these are cheaper to replace than the main device.
