I don't think it's that. I think going into the 7th Gen, most wrote Nintendo off but they proved that they don't need to directly compete with Sony and Microsoft to Win. They created their own lane and are more committed to crafting a unique experience you can only find on Nintendo. Gaming isn't just about processing power, RAM and pretty graphics.
Interactivity, Innovation and Insights are what Nintendo strives to cater to when making their consoles. Im not saying Sony doesn't either but Nintendo is exclusively a Game company. Everything they do is a spin off of their video game successes.
