The DVD player was no gimmick. It was useful to casuals and core alike. I don't remember the pricing exactly. I thought they were both priced around the same when GameCube came out. Both about $299, unless I'm mistaken. Correct me if I'm wrong. Oh, and you could play no music CD's either. The Sega CD and PC EngineTurbografx CD could do that. They were from two generations before.

The DVD player was very much a gimmick. The fact that you mention its appeal to casuals and claim it not a gimmick in the same paragraph is mind boggling.

The GameCube was more powerful than the PS2 as well; it was a gaming console without the gimmick of playing CDs or DVDs.

Mysteryman is actually correct.
By it's very definition a gimmick is "a trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or trade."
The DVD drive in the PS2 intended exactly that and helped sell the console.
