Lets think in reverse. If you have a 60 Hz monitor, you don't have to achieve 140 fps since the different isn't noticeable in your monitor. But since you play at the 144 Hz monitor your games plays at the uncapped frame rate but doesn't always stays at 144 fps so you might notice a lag because of the unstable fps. You might want to lock the frame rate. CMIIW.
EDIT: You might want to use fraps and see if the frame rate lock at 144 fps.
