I believe the headphone socket is disabled in docked mode and sound is routed to the hdmi port instead but then you wouldn't want to pull your docked switch out of its dock and smash on the floor when you pull the headphone cable by mistake so seems a very sensible precaution.
Nintendo does like a profit to say the least but like Apple if people are prepared to pay a premium then they got it right. It's not like the Playstation Vita launched at a low price the Switch is competitive for launch pricing. I personally find it too expensive for now but give it half a year or more I'll probably get one. Most people buy consoles long after launch when pricing is more competitive.
