Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is a hardware problem. The tiny batteries in the Joy-Cons make the bluetooth radios in them very weak. What I am going to do is put the dock by my couch on an end table and use a long HDMI cord to the TV. That way the dock will be close to the Joy-Cons and will get a strong signal.

Yep, I think that might be the cause. I don't think I'll have any problems since I play videogames very close to the TV/console. But that might be a particulary bothersome issue for some people. Maybe there is a way to improve the Bluetooth reception with an update? Not sure how those things work though :(
