They are not looking to 'do a 3ds.' The 3ds was meant to sell like the DS and didn't, forcing them to take a loss on the console to drum up sales. They are trying to avoid the mistakes of the Wii U, where a decent launch lineup gave way to one of the worst Nintendo droughts ever for the first half of 2013. The launch lineup may be sparce, but that allows them to have a steady stream of quality games throughout the year instead of having it all at once. Also having Zelda at launch is a killer app of the sort Wii U didn't have at launch despite all the great games it had on launch day. And giving themselves a window to fix any issues before the holiday season is smart (if that is what they are doing, which is impossible to know). They would be very disappointed if the Switch sales for summer 2017 are like 3ds sales were in summer 2011.

Yup, they definitely didn't had plan to cut 3DS price in its 1st year for 1/3 of initial price, and selling it at loss because of that. :D

Not only Wii U, but neither 3DS didnt had launch killer app while Switch is having Zelda BotW.
