$300 woud be a good price for a console that was better than PS4 and Xbox One, but not so much a console that's barely better than an Xbox 360.

For starters, both of those consoles were $399.99 and $499.99 when they launched. If a console came out that had the same spec leap that they had, you'd see the price range well above $299.99. Expecting otherwise is foolish. Secondly, "better" is reletive. You obviously think better is having better specs. Other's may say the Switch is superior because of the way it works. In that sense, it's far better and more capable.

The PS4 was $399.99 over 3 years ago.

The PS4 & XB1 are selling at $250 with a game.  If history is anything to go by this will become the new official price.  For $300 in 2017 I think it's correct to say a new console should be better or at least competitive than the consoles selling for $250 with a game.  It doesn't need to be a generational leap ahead of them to be better, and warrant a higher price.

Subjectively others can say whatever they want: if you think the weaker specs are outweighed by the portability, or just access to Nintendo games that's a fine opinion.

IMO many casuals will walk right past the Switch stand if it's $299 with no games and the other consoles are doing better deals.
