Except Switch is an actual portable game system. Which means Nintendo likely won't have much trouble selling at least 40-50 million of them, especially as time goes on as the price drops and more form factors are made available. If they can't even manage 40-50 million then obviously something very wrong has happened, but realistically they should be able to get to 40 and if they hit 40 it's too many users to not go ahead with a Switch 2 or whatever they want to make. So again, a lot of this stuff is much ado about nothing. Nintendo share holders will just have to content themselves with Nintendo making lots of money. Which they do every generation, even in periods where they have some hardware struggles. Nintendo makes lots of money, look at the last quarter, even with a half dead 3DS and a totally dead Wii U they pull a mini NES out of their ass and mobile profits to make more money than Sony's game division did for the same period. Nintendo has the whole making profit thing down to a science, as such quite frankly I don't really care if they sell 40-50 million or 80-90 million on that basis. It's not like I get any of that money. |
Well that's assuming the market sees it as a portable game system considering its size. And considering the 3DS has been the lowest selling handheld from Nintendo, 40-50 million units may not actually be reached.
Shareholders do not just look at profit. Shareholders have to predict how a company is going to perform, because they need to be in the position of selling shares before the value drops. If Nintendo show that their business strategy is wrong, again, then they may lose a significant amount of value. The fact that YoY Nintendo is down on it's net revenue is not going to reassure investors that they are a safe long-term bet. Without investors, Nintendo will not be able to function.
Comparing Nintendo's shares to Sony's is absolutely pointless - two very different companies.

So how does that matter then if you're not reliant on Nintendo as your only gaming platform? |
Let me remind you of my comment:
"So how much the Switch sells will be an indicator as to the direction Nintendo moves in the next few years. If you love Nintendo as they are today and the Switch has poor sales, that Nintendo will cease to exist in the near future. "
If you like Nintendo now, then if they keep making bad decisions, they will cease to exist in the future. Whether you like Nintendo or not is unrelated to being reliant on them as your only gaming platform (wtf?).

It doesn't matter either way actually. The whole "if Nintendo sells great that means lots of developers will make great games for it, so surely you should worry if Switch is your only system!" is equally a load of shit. The Wii and 3DS have mediocre third party support despite selling a lot. Why? Becauase there are alternatives that offer developers even more lucrative options (versus Wii there was PS3 + 360 and versus 3DS there's iOS/Android) and against Switch there will always be the PS4-XB1-PC AND mobile on the other end to siphon off developer support. So it doesn't even matter if Switch is the only system you have. It's not worth losing sleep over how well it sells so long as it doesn't totally flop. You're going to get basically the same types of games either way, doesn't matter if it sells 40 million or 80 million. The developers who really want to make games for the system will be there at 40 million, anything higher is gravy. No point in stressing over it. |
