Pokémon games have always been on handhelds to encourage people to take it with them and interact with others who also play the same game. There is absolutely no reason why the Switch wouldn't allow people to do that.

In fact, if you look at recent games, it is clear the series has been getting more and more ambitious, and Sun & Moon were barely playable on the 3DS. The games are demanding better hardware, and the Switch is right around the corner.
