Personally, I think what happened is Nintendo decided to continue with the Switch, even if some higher ups weren't thrilled with it, out of respect for Iwata. If it fails, they will have a backup, more traditional HH in a year or so. Now, if that fails, too, there are no ifs, ands, or buts, Nintendo is going 3rd party.
But great for Nintendo to add more confusion for potential customers, it always helps.
