The Switch reveal trailer in October must have took whatever wind was left out of the Wii U's sails. It was already down 41.4% YoY for the first ten months of the year, but for November and December to be so far down that neither could lay claim to the best month of the year for the system (that would go to February, which saw the Wii U pull 70k units) is just disappointing. That puts the Wii U at about 457k for the year. Back in April I would have guessed the Wii U could pull upwards of a million units for 2016. Boy, was I wrong. I hope the Switch does well to make up for the Wii U selling poorly. I think it'll have a very strong launch. Half a million in the U.S. alone at least. But it's going to have to keep it up in the following months. I think it'll need to pull at least 200k per month on average over the spring and summer months to demonstrate that it will be successful. Of course, even 100k/month would still be vastly better than the Wii U, but would still be very weak. If it can do 4 million this year that would keep it on par with the 3DS. |
I talked to a few retailers in my area and none of them had new Wii Us in stock for the holidays. Apparently across the continent Nintendo was recalling units from Best Buy (maybe all stores?) right before Christmas, so that seems to be the reason why the Wii U sold only 80K.
