Controller Defintion - "a remote piece of hardware used to direct or control an electronic device"
It is a wireless controller, a Joystick was the primary input for the Atari 2600. Nintendo did not bring the innovation of Wireless Controllers to games.
Regardless Reggie's points were not a good case in my opinion. He talks about innovating for the good of the industry, and one of his points is even PARENTAL CONTROLS.
He doesn't make an argument that Nintendo is better off as a hardware manufacturer, his argument is solely about pride, what they enjoy doing and "the good of the industry."
