So it wouldn't make sense for WiiU owners to buy a new game for a new console with paid online. So, I think it depends on Switch success. If a lot of people who doesn't have WiiU will buy it then Nintendo won't have any problems with Splatoon 2 |

Both splatoon and mario kart are only updates on the wii u version and seems strange those being free online on one console and charged on the other. If there is a price cut and I get a Switch I doubt I will buy mario kart because it will have no online for me. Not too interested in Splatoon anyway so thats a non-issue. |
Uh except Splatoon 2 is a sequel in everyway, so those who enjoyed the first game are definitely going to be interested in it. Not sure why you guys think otherwise, but it's pretty clear the game is new and not a port.

I guess it was this article that made it seem like only a sequel in name only.
