Not even remotely similar situation; PS4 had massive developer support, Switch does not. Switch needs all the help it can get.

3DS has already had a long lifespan.

We'll agree to disagree. But like it or not Nintendo needs the 3ds software sales and any additional hardware sales as well. What they could do is to stop selling the 3ds and 3ds xl. Just sell the 2ds and new 3ds( and xl) cause those are the ones getting the sales right now. Get rid of the extra weight and in my opinion at least 3ds can have a life as long as the ps2 without harming the sales of the switch.
