I think there's definitely a big focus on new IP at Nintendo when compared to what it used to be, but personally I still wish they give us plenty of awesome stuff from what they already have. In other words, having a new IP every one or two years is great and all, but just give me some fucking Metroid already. 2D or 3D, I don't care. Both, if possible. But come on. |
Something I didn't note in the OP is that everyone (except the animal crossing team) is putting their known franchises on the Switch first, before moving onto new IP. I also think you'll see a lot more outsourcing of extablished franchises going forward. I think that's happening with Metroid, and I think that'll happen with F-Zero and hopefully Starfox in the future. I think that you'll see a new animal crossing after Splatoon 2 is done. Wouldn't be surprised if Splatoon 2 is already done, and they're working on Animal Crossing as we speak.
There isn't a doubt of my mind that we'll see a 3D Metroid this E3 for example. My guess is we'll see that, Beyond Good and Evil, and the new Retro IP this E3. The timing feels right for all three. And judging by that, my hope is that this E3 is western focused to counteract the japan-focused Switch Press conference. My hope is also that From Software is the "surprise developer" for Metroid, but that's pretty baseless.
