Speaking of VA, I am a huge HUGE fan of the film 'Princess Mononoke'. I wonder how many people will get angry at me if I admit I prefer the English dub to the Japanese one? |
The English VA is pretty good. The only downside is the liberties they took with the translation. If you turn on the subtitles with the English VA you'll notice the subtle and not so subtle differences in the translation. The more literal translation in the subtitles enhances the story imo. For example the english dub alters "To see with eyes unclouded" by adding "by hate" at the end. Not neccesary. The dub adds "You are dead to us from now on" when Ashitaka is banned from the village, which removes some of the mystery and gravity of what's going on by breaking the silence. When Okkoto the boar god is near death the english dub says, "Don't touch him, he is no longer a god" while the subtitles say "Don't go near him, the curse will fall on you". The literal translation makes more sense in the story. However the voice work itself is done very well.
I've got multiple versions anyway, the Japanese blu-ray import, Disney blu-ray, and 2 older DVD releases.
