You'd have to be incredibly cynical to believe that we aren't getting a mainline series game announced in the near future. Nintendo has been pretty transparent about what they're doing with Metroid. They want to make 2D Metroid, they want to make 3D Metroid, they want to make a new Prime game that revolves around Sylax. They made Federation Force to set that up.
Retro's not working on a Metroid game because Tanabe doesn't know what they're doing. People are just bent out of shape because Metroid isn't a launch game, which was rediculous to think when we were told explicitely over a year ago that a new Metroid wouldn't happen until well into the Switch's life. What's likely happening is that Tanabe is working with some third party dev to make a new 3D Metroid - probably a Prime reboot. I don't know what could be going on with a Metroid 5, but the common thought is that that's Sakamoto's domain.
Point being there are obvious reasons we haven't seen Metroid. I'm willing to bet we'll see a new core Metroid teased as early as E3, going by Reggie's most recent comment. "Come back to me in a year" reads clear as day.
