I bought my WiiU after my PS4 and before my X1, figuring that the PS4/WiiU combo would cover nearly all my bases. Suffice to say, when Nintendo decided to slowly euthanize the WiiU, I was quite displeased. As an owner of every Nintendo system (fine...not the VirtualBoy), I have no recollection of them ever abandoning a console so abruptly and completely. It was rather diaconcerting to me that the NX was announced so early into the WiiU cycle, and the Switch reveal was like a punch to the mouth.
Nintendo presented...wait for it...the WiiU...with games...awesome. Putting the home- and handheld- console argument aside, it begged the simple question, "Why the hell didn'y you just do this for the WiiU!?" Traditionally, I knew that I would eventually own the latest Nintendo console, but this latest affront has given me pause. Odds are that I will eventually buy a Switch, but is are there any other WiiU owners or observers of this oddity who are likewise concerned?

Nintendo abandoned Gamecube just as quickly they abandoned Wii U.
I have a Wii U, and if this means Nintendo will be back on track making good games, I say good riddance.

What's the incentive of Wii owners to upgrade to a "Wii HD"? The whole point of Wii was graphics don't matter.
That audience was never upgrading just to play Wii Sports and Just Dance in HD when those games ran fine on the regular Wii. And Wii sales were sinking like the Titanic before Wii U ever even showed up.

No, the point wasn't graphics didn't matter. Just that the games do. Other than better graphics, having a HDMI output would reduce the lag of your TV, that could be a real game killer. I had my SD widescreen as long as possible because of playing on Wii.

I don't know if the analogy is truly direct: the GC was the best system (by perfomance), when it launched. The WiiU was far from the best, and Nintendo knew that. If you're checking in underpowered, it is incumbent upon you to ensure that value proposition is otherwise maintained (a la the Wii). Also, the GC debuted in late 2001 and was succeeded by the Wii in late 2006 (5 years). The WiiU debuted in late 2012 and is being succeeded by the Switch in early 2017 (4 years); the Switch ("NX") was announced, however, in early 2015 (2 years).
For the record, Nintendo has always made good games.
