It's probably not negliglibe, but marriage and relationships have been present in Fire Emblem for a long time, so I doubt this was the main factor. The decrease in difficulty and increase in accessibility seem like much bigger factors to its success.
Personally, I don't mind it, since I love the franchise enough that I want to see it succeed, and the common complaints people seem to level aren't mandatory anyway. I am glad Fates returned to a more classic difficulty, as that's something I felt Awakening was limited on.
