I don't see what the issue is. The 3DS still has a strong following, unlike the Wii U. It isn't a good idea to abandon that audience. The 3DS will getting far less games than it used to. The 3DS games coming from Nintendo will most likely be ports or smaller, less ambitious games. Third party support will still be coming in from Japanese developers. Most Western developers abandoned the 3DS a long time ago and will most likely focus their efforts on the Switch. The 3DS will die slowly and with dignity.

To suggest that Nintendo pull the plug now would be committing the same mistake Sega of Japan committed in the mid '90s. Japan wanted to pull the plug on the Sega Genesis in order to try snd sell more Saturns at a much quicker pace. Both America and Europe were telling their Japanese bosses that the 16-bit market would remain strong in the west for at least another year. The Japanese didn't listen and killed off the Genesis anyway. This enraged Sega's fanbase who would end up supporting Sony instead.
