Mass Effect is up there. Bioware really outdid themselves, building one of the most believable, interesting, and well rounded sci-fi universes out there in any medium. It's got everything. Awesome, and easily identifiable alien races, supernatural forces, great futuristic designs, amazing music, perhaps the best cast of characters in any game ever, unrivalled continuity across the (current) trilogy, fantastic writing (ending of 3 notwithstanding). Obviously the series as a whole is still relatively young, and Andromeda will tell us a lot about whether Bioware can maintain the ridiculously high bar they've set, but even if they can't, the original trilogy will always be a landmark in outstanding game design and world building.
