"Back in the good ol' days" devs simply removed things to make games run smoothly in splitscreen (and keep 60Hz). No need for dancing Toads that need to be rendered on each screen, swinging objects or fancy colors sprinkling everywhere when all you see is your kart and a fraction of the track at the sides of your kart (if you don't know the tracks, it's all about guessing where to go in splitscreen tbh since tracks aren't flat anymore but go up and down making turns on small screens for your non-gaming/noob/beginner friends stupidly hard).

But yeah, resolution is the future and Nintendo at least follows that path and still is blamed.

Here you got both extreme sides against each other, case closed :P

I don't care what is the future, then. I don't mind playing games at 720p and never have, but racing games at 30fps are hard to play. That's just how it is, and I'm not overly mad at it, since it's how I've been playing multiplayer MK8 for the last 3 years anyway.

Well, apparently deluxe runs at 60fps in two-player split-screen (wich I think the WiiU version didn't..?), so if you and one of your other friends have a Switch you can have local 4-people multiplayer at 60 fps that way.
