I mean, anime is incredibly broad, so it kind of is not having an open mind. Saying you don't like anime is like saying you don't like live-action. The only "associated conventions" and "style" are being animated and being produced in Japan.

I don't like anime in general; there are exceptions (Princess Mononoke comes to mind) but the tropes common to around 90% of anime irritate the crap out of me. That's not being closed minded, that's simply not being a fan of overly melodramatic high school aged main characters, cutesy mascot co-stars, technicoloured hair, and other such widespread cliches.

The fact that you actually think that this discribes even 50% of anime shows how incredibly narrow your view of anime is. What you're discribing are stereotypes. Even most people who like anime don't like that stuff, I certainly don't, but much of anime has absolutely none of it. Studio Ghibli films are like the marijuana of "anime is more than just slice of life/shonen high school dramas with big swords and hidden jutsu."

If you're only issue is anime stereotypes, and you actually think that Princess Mononoke is good, you probably do like anime and just had someone with crappy taste show you a ton, because PM isn't even a kink in the surface of stuff that is absolutely nothing like what you just discribed.
