"And then it's all about, what's going to be included? Obviously the inclusion of the two Joy-Con, critically important; all the right cables, the dock, critically important. We also have to do this from a financial perspective as well. Once we got to that bundle, it really needed to be at $299 without a piece of software."
I find it curious that he calls what appears to be the basic Switch a "Bundle". So it seems that maybe Nintendo are planing a more basic Switch, which is to unbundle the docking station.
The whole statement is kinda oddly worded "What's going to be included?". As if there was a moment where someone questioned whether the Joy-Con are essential, and the response was yes they are critically important. It would be like asking whether a controller should be included with the base Xb one or PS4.
Suggests $299.99 is cutting the price right to the bone. But we know Nintendo likes to have an actual profit margin on its products from day 1. So I think they could afford to pack in a game of some sort, but that might technically mean selling at a loss because the value of the game has to be written down.
But I also suspect that Nintendo has a contingency plan. If the thing does not take off like gangbusters, they may drop the base price to $249 and also introduce some bundles at $299. However they are seeing if they can get away with a base price of $299 with bundles at $349/$399. If they can get away with that then clearly it's a much better financial position for them.
