It should be free, but the fact remains that not enough players were vocal about it since Xbox started doing it. Nintendo had free online for about 15 years or so (since GameCube) and it was constantly shit on, especially the Wii U's online (which in my opinion was a huge step up from the Wii) they got the message loud and clear, be more like Sony and Xbox regarding their online, and they are. However unfortunate that may be.
