A darker story could work very well for Metroid especially if it is the last full mature franchise by Nintendo. Just because other M was made poorly executed doesn't mean a more story driven Metroid is a bad idea.Imagine corruption with a more in depth storyline and a darker and arguably more intresting world. Also if you shoot plasma balls, rockets or laser  beams at enemies, something may alter about their appearance.

And a light story could work well too. I just can't get with the need of "darken" every Nintendo game...

I agree, hell you don't even need to 'darken' Metroid, the story is plenty dark in most installments already. They just need to make another game in the franchise that has good gameplay and a serviceable story. Leave the dark grit for the multiple other Metroidvania games and franchises out there.

If Other M didn't try so hard to make Samus 'dramatic' by Japanese fanfiction writing standards it would have been a good enough game minus a few miscues. Howver the story and the story related reasons for Samus not using her full abilities early on were crap. They were trying to aim for a new audience but wound up pissing off us old timers. Nintendo if they are going to have some success will need to find the right balance of Metroid style and consumer friendly but their last two attempts have been sadly mishandled because they didn't quite understand what is the Metroid style that draws its fans out.
