Yes and no, mostly yes.

I have played like 70 hours. Just recently beat the game. Sadly I'm probably going to keep playing some cause my completionist attitude wants me ot get legendary weapons, and other things. Luckily combat is very enjoyable imo.

But damn is the story a freaking disaster. Now the overal plot isn't bad, it was just executed insanely bad. Side characters and side plots are completely thrown to the wayside. Let's look at some characters in the story. Spoilers below.

Emperor: If you didnt' watch movie, you get like what 1 whole scene in the entire game he is in. (along with two others in that cutscene never scene outside of it) Next time we see him, we just see his empty clothes. I'm assumign that dracula thing we fought multiple times going up the building was him. But really that's it. The seemingly "bad" guy of the game is shown ONCE in a weak cut scene.
Next Luna's brother. Again ignoring the movie (which he isn't in much anyway) you have him show up ONCE and basically there to kill you. He is in that Emperor scene being ordered to kill his sister. Then we see a flashback of him and his sister where she says to give noct a chance. Next we see he is dead with the kings sword for some reason. how did he get the sword. Why did he come around so much. Based on all interactions we seen and the movie, there is no reason he should have switched sides. As with other plot points, you can read a few scattered notes on teh floor.
Which brings up a huge flaw. The dead empty soldiers entire plot is only explained if you read these freaking random notes laying around a building.
Then the merc. She shows up to to fight you, then leaves saying "mercs don't work after hours" Uh, what clock. DId the emperor say you have only 4 hours to kill him, if you can't leave? The scene was 100% at dark time, so clearly it's not a day/night thing. But ignore that. The rest of the game she just instantly is just a buddy then.
I coudl go on, but the premise is that sooo soo many of characters just falt out ignored, plot points abandoned, huge missing details going from A to B. Basically the game was rushed as soon as you left the main land. It went into pure linear hallway mode like FF13, yet at least 13 had a fleshed out story. This one was like they were rushed and didn't have time to do things so they threw them into notes and tossed them randomly on the floor. Or had a character explain them all in dialogue. Such as the 10 year telling you whats all happened in 10 years. (most pointless timeskip ever)

OH and when you touch the crystal with Notcis, the soundtrack was WAY TOO LOUD. I could not understand/hear a single word that Ardyn said during his big exposition reveal.

Oh as for DLC, I'm assuming the dlc showing what the 3 main characters did while tehy were "away". I dont' mind that DLC. None of those moments are important imo. They just let us see what we know happened basically. What they need to release (and for free) is stuff showing how Luna's bro changed, what happened to him. What happened to emperor, what happened to ect. Showing in a cutscene the stuff on the notes explaining the MT's, ect. You know, make this story not a mes of missing stuff.

The game just felt like you were reading a book, say Lord of the Rings. You read book 1 as is. The actual big book of hundreds of pages. Then for book 2 and 3 you read the wikipedia entry for the plot. Heck, that is giving this game too much credit. Wikipedia woudl explain some of the stuff better.

In conclusion. THere is a good story there, it's just they didn't have time to finish it. Big joke, seeing as this game was announced 10 years ago
