I'm going to have to disagree with you, I think the best way to find out what the general public thinks of a product is by listening to what they have to say about the product.
I'm pretty sure we saw many articles talk about how Wii & DS were gimmicky ideas that were going to get dominated by their more powerful competitors. I dont think anybody who speaks from a "hardcore" gamers perspective is a good person to listen to when it comes to figuring out what the average consumer wants.
When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.
