The Wii U was not promoted very well. Also all the buzz at the time was the upcoming Sony and Microsoft consoles. I think the first ps4 event was about 2 months after the Wii U launch.
The switch isint facing those types of shadows causing people to wait and see while saving their money. So it's getting the spotlight you want a new piece of hardware to get.
