Not sure if serious but... The PlayStation 3 never fully recovered after its failed launch and just barely passed the X360 at the end of its life. From the 160 Millions PS2, they got to 80 Millions PS3. 

 

The Xbox One, even today, never recovered from its really difficult first months and had to abandon the Kinect in order to stay in the competition, but never managed to look like a real competitor to the PS4 because of the big gap in sales in this first year: the competition was already over. 

 

You're right, people were exaggerating, these price never did any harm to their respective console...
