I'm going to be brutally honest in what I see in this data so as a disclaimer to anyone that's pro wii... prepare to get pissed off.
I hear from many places that the point of the fanboy wars is to sell most consoles only in an effort to get the best third party support therefore getting the best games. What's funny is that it seems the consoles with less sales are dominated by third parties while the wii still lacks support proportional to its sales and if it does get support, it's usually in the form of shovel-ware.
I'm having trouble coming up with a hypothesis as to why this is true but considering games like wii sports have sold twenty million copies, the data must be a little skewed. My guess is that first party sequels will always have a large amount of hype further skewing the data and third parties given the choice on their sequels, would rather develop them to their fullest potential technically, in order to receive hype for things such as graphics as oppose to innovation. Basically, the only way to be successful on the wii as a third party developer is to depend heavily on innovation with new ip's. This is all in large because of the fact that the wii isn't as strong as the 360 or PS3. As a result, most high profile sequels as you have probably noticed go to the 360 and PS3.
