Having a seperate 3DS successor goes against everything that Nintendo has been trying to do for the last few years.
First they merged the handheld & consoles teams of their software & hardware divisions then they released a device that functions as both a handheld & console.
It's pretty clear that going forward Nintendo just wants to support one single hardware ecosystem.
When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.
