The is a true 3DS successor it's called Switch and will be shown in around 4 days from now, it has differences in design because it's a progression much like the DS design was a progression. 3DS is the swan song of an era coming to an end much like GBA was the end of that era.
Switch is more in line with modern day designs for devices, connecting to a TV allows them to kill two birds with one stone and only develop for one device which merging their userbases into one. Few years from now everyone would have moved on.
