| zippy said: If Switch sells 50m and Nintendo dont release a dedicated handheld (Switch is a hybrid), is that classed as successful?? Wii U and 3DS combined will reach 80million and its been classed as a poor gen for Nintendo. Im guessing Nintendo might have a 3DS type successor waiting in the wings in case Switch doesn't fly off the shelves. Its quite a dicey move from Nintendo when you think about it. Their console reputation cant get any lower, but if Switch is a disaster it could also harm its handheld reputation. I wonder how many Switches would have to be sold for Nintendo not to make another dedicated handheld. |
The combination of handheld and home console is less to do with hardware sales and more to do with software sales. Software is where the money is made.
Too many games were left to fail on WiiU. If they had been on a console that sold more they might have performed better. Merging the 2 divisions not only means this would no longer happen (obviously depending on the success of Switch) but that having a larger library due to the combined library will lead to more consumer intrest in the console. Which of course leads to better software sales.
If the Switch fails though I would fully expect Nintendo have been working on a 3DS successor as a plan B.
