Those examples didn't have the problem of lack of compelling content, so things such as more advanced technology, higher internet speeds and a better user interface were the hurdles to overcome. Those things are a lot easier accomplished than motivating dozens of companies to invest in content production. |
Lack of compelling content is a matter of opinion. But true, it's a new tech with a fledgling userbase, thus it won't see CoD type budgets for a while. Consoles didn't start out as multi million selling devices in the first few weeks. Nor did they start out with multi million dollar budgets for games. There's plenty smaller companies motivated to give VR a try, plus bigger content is coming too.
Take a look here http://uploadvr.com/ Doesn't look like it's failing.
Or check out the upcoming games list

I see plenty motivation, and plenty interest in pretty expensive peripherals.
Has a racing wheel accesory ever sold as fast? They're still around and supported. (Unfortunaly so well that Dirt Rally, Assetto Corsa and Project Cars can't even be decently played without them...)
To me the signs point to an evolution in games/entertainment, rather than the next gimmick. Adoption rate closer to how 4K tvs were/are entering the market instead of Wii Sports or Kinect. Gaming on a screen won't go away, DVD is still here too, but it will slowly grow and eventually become a new standalone form of entertainment.
To me, it's much more exciting to be an early adopter into VR than 4K. Both are still moving targets, with hdmi 2.1 just announced and dynamic high dynamic range lol, same with VR. Standalone headsets are the future, lighter, 4k, 8k, inside out tracking, pupil tracking, foveated rendering. Yet there's already a lot more fun to be had than watching a handful of HDR movies and play slightly sharper games, at a fraction of the price of a 4K HDR tv...
PSVR has had a great start. The experience and available content exceeded my expectations. Ofcourse I'm very hungry for more. It's so dull to go back to gaming on a screen now :/
