PlayStation VR Had A “Great Start,” Says Sony CEO

2016 marked the year where virtual reality gaming made the big push into the mainstream, with the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR all having their long-awaited launches. While none of the big three really lit up the sales charts or featured any games that were must-haves, Sony’s virtual reality headset has done the best in the sales department so far.

Now Sony CEO Kaz Hirai has spoken about how the PlayStation VR headset is doing at the recent Sony CES Keynote in Los Angeles, where he said that the headset is off to a great start. He said “PlayStation VR launched last October and gave us a great start also through the Holiday Season as well. So with PlayStation VR we’re able to provide you dramatic, transformational new gaming experience, and our ambitions for VR aren’t limited just to gaming.”

He also announced a new VR experience from Sony Music Entertainment called Carry Me: The VR Experience, which is available now for $1.99. It’s described as the following:

“Inspired by the hit song “Carry Me” by superstar electronic musician Kygo, this revolutionary new music experience transports you into a stunning visual world and immerses you within beautiful environments of oceans, forests, mountains, skies and a final epic sweep of the cosmos. Feel the incredible sensation of seamlessly floating upward as you continually scale larger throughout your journey into the world of Kygo. A true must see for music fans!”

Despite Sony apparently being happy with how VR is going for them, it definitely did not live up to the expectations that were originally put on it for any of the big three in 2016. Analytics firm SuperData originally estimated that Sony’s VR device would sell 2.6 million by the end of 2016, though they then downgraded that to just 750k. This still puts it ahead of the Vive’s estimates of 450K and the Rift’s estimates of 355K.

I'd love to get one, but I just don't have the disposable income to justify such a purchase.
Maybe if there was more porn available for it.

The thing is sold out in so many regions. Sounds like Sony sold all they could produce. Hopefully they meet demand this year!

I've very excited for this tech, but not I'm willing to pay for their alpha and beta models and at the same time be their guinea pig. I'll keep my eye on it to see how it develops; however, I agree that porn would do wonders for this tech.

Oh I'm sure the porn is cumming soon. I would get one and even the wife had stated she wants the PSVR but I just got a hunting rifle in November and a second PS3 for Christmas. I have a PS4 now. I think we're holding out until next holiday season. Well see.

It's great, but it does make normal games less enjoyable...

Driving without VR doesn't feel right anymore, it looks are weirdly stretched with worse view of the road ahead despite running at much higher resolution. I can't be bothered with analog aiming anymore in rottr, it feels so caveman like. I put it on easy and hacked everyone to death instead. I tried some FC4 last night. On a 92" screen it still feels very small, restrictive, flat, bad sense of scale, no good overview of the world, playing with blinders on and same caveman like aiming and looking around.

Then I put Bound back on in VR, yes this is the way games are meant to be played. Although without the teleporting that is, full motion is fine as platforming in Windlands works perfectly. Hurry up with Resident evil 7.

Will get sometime this year along with the pro. Almost caught up with purchasing games I've been missing out on, so you are next mr. VR

Sony pulling a Microsoft with the sales numbers it seems.

I guess they'll report sales like they did with the Vita, aka not at all.

Low sales, no great games, the second sentence of the article makes all three sound like complete failures, lol.

2.6 million, down to 750k and then barely or not making that number? Yeah, too costly, too soon, too poorly implemented in actual games, if only anyone could have predicted that VR wouldn't be a huge deal in 2016...
