Seemed pretty usual to me, with the exception of the rise of populists who offer easy solutions to difficult problems. 2016 was also the year I noticed democracy suffering some losses (mainly the situation in Turkey and seeing some news about trust in the importance of democracy hitting a worryingly low point).
