Sry but those numbers are nothing compared to NSMB/U (previous 2D Mario platformers) numbers for instance. Point is that 2D Mario platformer games have good sales numbers.

Forgive me if I am misunderstanding your point, but ANY time a Nintendo game goes over a million or close, those are good sales. They may not be top notch but I think Miyamoto or some Nintendo higher stated in a interview or investor discussion earlier last year. most games outside of massive budget ones like Zelda, usually break even with a 500,000 in sales, making them a success. The bigger games require much more but are usually offset by other games selling well or to expectations .

Super Mario Maker, is by no means a small game but it isn't costing Nintendo a massivee amount hence 3-4 million on the Wii U is a success and whatever they get from the 3DS port is probably just additional gravy. Now does that mean they are going to rush off to make Super Mario Maker a annual franchise, that is doubtful. But no doubt we will see another version of the game down the line or something similar to it in another franchise. People are asking for a Zelda Maker, which among the bigger stand alone franchises would be the ideal next step besides redoing Mario Maker with another one of Nintendo's platform stars.

Mario Maker is 2D Mario platformer, and my point is those numbers are not impressive for 2D Mario platform game, compare them with any previous 2D Mario platform game and you will get picture. So if Nintendo make completely new 2D Mario platformer game (and probably will), again will have great sales of at least couple of millions.

Maybe I am wrong, but I dont see Mario Maker is new Nintendo franchise, mostly because that's just spin off of 2D Mario platform game.
