I don't have a good vibe from it either. With the Wii U beeing dropped hard, i don't expect consumer trust to be high on Nintendo home consoles.
If it doesn't have power to run cross gen ports, then i don't think it will catch-on. Maybe if they do try to merge their portable business into it. But, i think they are waiting to see how it performs before deciding that.
