Dear lord I've never seen so many stereotypes and generalizations in a single thread. There are great combat systems in both Western and Japanese games. Of course it helps that Platinum, the best in the hack 'n slash business, calls Japan home. But if you look in the right places you can find what you're looking for in Europe, North America, or Japan.

These dichotomies are so tiresome. Let's have some nuance.

People saying "there's great stuff from both side of the ocean", the whole point of my thread is to disagree with that notion when it comes to sword/melee based combat. I compare the best the West has got with the best Japan has got, mano a mano. I'm here to tell you the biggest stuff from the West barely rises above its B-tier janky games, while the best Japanese stuff rises head and shoulders above its Compile Heart&co jank. Sure there's maybe been 1 or 2 decent sword/melee based combat from the West, but the majority is mediocre and doesn't change the fact that W3's combat is barely better than a game like Bound by Flame.

For any sword/melee based combat, even the best the West has to offer (thinking Witcher 3, Skyrim, AssCreed etc) have combat which just feel awful and not much better than the worst euro jank stuff. They're not better than games like Lords of Fallen, Bound By Flame or Piranha Byte games etc.

I mean you look 10 seconds at this https://youtu.be/tpjc5j_FT4A?t=338

and then compare it with Witcher 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5pycqmx0ec

and you're not gonna say the latter is that much better, or even that much different at all in terms of style.

but compare them to Nier Automata https://youtu.be/19c94qHANlc?t=958

and there's a clear difference.

Combat from Western games feel recycled from each other, even the prototype of the cancelled Flash game looked like the same scripted and automated combat I've seen a dozen times.

Altough they've mastered the FPS and TPS I think Western devs need a lesson in sword based/melee combat mechanics and philosophy from the top devs in Japan.

Why are you comparing action RPG's to an Action hack n slash ? Thats like saying RPG's and Arcade games should be played in the same fashion. Platinum has never made an action rpg, so we shall see how platinum handles this Scalebound. I think what you mean to say is that you prefer  arcade style hack n slash/ beat em up style gameplay to action rpg's.

Because I'm not comparing action RPGs to a hack n slash? Nier Automata is ARPG too. It looks so good it looks like hack n slash.

W3 would be infitely more fun if it had the combat system of any big Japanese games in the RPG genre (Dragons Dogma, Bloodborne, Nier:A, Nioh etc)

W3 even got the handling of the horse wrong, Roach controls like a mofukin tank!
